Remember your Roots - The Importance of Grounding...

So, Grounding... What do you think of the word? Some of us may think of aeroplanes being grounded because of bad weather, an electrical appliance being grounded, a child being grounded as punishment.

Grounding is not an idea, it is a natural state. Unfortunately, most of us have forgotten about it. We should learn how to 'come back down to Earth' - in doing this we achieve balance, harmony, healing and peace.

To start with, let's define what I mean by 'Grounding'.

'Grounding is Energetically Connecting Yourself to Earth'

There is energy everywhere. Literally everywhere.

Science has proven that almost all of an atom is energy A commonly quoted number is

99.9999999999999%, but obviously because different atoms are designed differently and serve different purposes, that number is always a rough guess...

So what?

As an Energy Healer, I know how the human body relies on a good flow of energy in order to function properly. If everything is flowing as it should, there is balance, harmony and the physical, emotional and mental parts of 'you' are happy.

Of course, energy flow within the body is something a lot of people understand and accept. The fact that we are 'biological electromagnets' is what make energy healing practices possible. Lets break this down:

There are two types of energy at work on, and in, the body. The first of these two is the energy generated by food, nutrients and so on, and is created by a process called metabolism. This is what most people think of when they hear the word 'energy', and is what I will refer to here as Physical Energy.

The second type of energy is different. This one is the energy that causes all other energy. This energy is what gives the universe the energy to start with. It's what gives the sun its energy, it's why the universe is moving, it's what creates life, it's that energy that exists, and works at a level so small and widespread, that most of it is undetectable. The second type of energy is Quantum Energy, and this is what makes up about 99.9999999999999% of atoms.

Quantum sounds complicated, but it isn't. It is the name given to the smallest possible quantity of something exising independently (i.e. not as part of something else). So, we are dealing with things that are so small that other things are made from them.

Physical energy is made up of great big chunks of energy produced by biochemical reactions within the body. Quantum Energy is what makes everything involved in that biochemical process. It is in the cells involved, it is in the glucose and oxygen used, it is what provides the driving force behind the process.

Anyway...

Yes, sorry about that, I get carried away sometimes. So, Grounding...

Quantum Energy is all around us, as I think you may have gathered by now. We absorb it from our surroundings, and through our Crown Chakra, which is the energy centre right at the top of the head.

Have you ever received a shock from a car door? Rubbed a balloon on a jumper to make your hair stand up? Seen Lightning?

Well, These are all examples of energy at work - static electricity, stored energy. We get sparks, shocks and static because the energy is stored in the object and cannot be released. The energy needs to be grounded. That's why you get a shock, because the stored energy goes through you into the ground.

For energy to be work on something, it needs to be able to flow through it. It enters, does its job, and leaves.

To illustrate grounding, let's imagine a person as a battery. Positive (+) at the top, and Negative (-) at the bottom. Quantum Energy enters the body through the positive 'terminal' at the top (The Crown Chakra). This energy is positive - healing, calming, transforming and useful. It is this energy that energy healers like myself direct into our clients to heal and change. Let's think of it as energy from above. A gift from heaven and the angels - so, it must be good for you!

So, we have a positive terminal, where all the positive 'good' energy comes in, and we have a negative terminal, where (yes you guessed it) negative 'bad' energy leaves.

The point at which this energy is supposed to leave our bodies is the Root Chakra. This Chakra is located at the Perineum (google for more info), which is the small area of skin between your private parts and your anus (which is why we healers aren't allowed to touch it). This small, intimate place is where your negative energy is supposed to leave. Because of the way the human energy system works, the negative energy leaving this chakra can leave through the soles of our feet, or anywhere in between.

With Physical Energy, we bring in the positive energy (stored in food) through our mouths. It then descends our throat, stomach, digestive system, intestines and the negative waste products leave the body from 'down below'.

It's the same with Quantum Energy. It enters through the top, flows through doing its work, and leaves through the bottom.

So, what is grounding? Grounding is energetically connecting yourself to Earth. This process enables Quantum Energy to flow efficiently through and around your body, and enables you to release the negative 'stuff' into the planet (because she loves dirt). Any negative feelings, emotions, experiences... Pretty much anything negative inside you can be transformed, and sometimes eliminated completely, by connecting yourself to the ground from which you came.

There is another type of Quantum Energy, called Earth Energy, which is supposed to enter our bodies from below and flow upward. Management of this energy and its use is not what we're writing about today, but it is an important one for when we meditate or 'use' energy. We will be covering this more in a future article, so for now let's stick to Grounding.

Fascinating... But what's in it for me?

Grounding is extremely simple to do. The biggest difficulty we have is remembering to do it. The best way to remember something is by repetition, so I'd recommend practicing grounding 4-5 times a day (or more, if you remember). The eventual goal is to develop a habit of being constantly grounded.

Grounding has been proven to reduce inflammation, help with mood-related conditions, eliminate toxins and calm us down, amongst other things. The reason it is so good for us is because Grounding promotes homoeostasis, which is basically a way of saying that the body is in charge of itself. It is the state of balance, harmony and equilibrium in the bodily processes and functions.

In other words, Grounding lets your body do its job more effectively.

It's all to do with vibration of energy, resonance and various other Quantum ideas, but the reason grounding works is because you match your vibrational frequency to that of the Earth. When you are resonating with each other, the human and th Earth can work together.

In practical terms, it's always best to use somehing that is designed specifically for the job. You can use a knife as a screwdriver, but it's a lot better if you use a screwdriver as a screwdriver, no?

Bear with me, I'm getting there...

We are made from stuff found in and on the planet. We are not made of our problems, ilnesses, thoughts, actions or anything else. Everything has a frequency. A positive thought raises our vibrational frequency, as does hugs, kisses, laughing and many more happy things; a negative thought lowers our vibrational frequency, as does illness, stress, anxiety, ego, expectations.... This is another endless list. What I'm trying to illustrate here is that we, and our component parts are designed to vibrate at the same rate as the planet. Any other frequency that we introduce into ourselves will have an effect on mind, body and soul.

And that's how grounding works.

It's very easy to ground yourself...

1. Connect to Nature

Take a hike... Literally. Simply being in a natural environment like a forest, a beach, a mountain, your garden at home, or even just a cowfield, will connect you to Earth. Anything that brings your body into contact with the planet will ground you.

2. Kick off your Shoes

Take those smelly, sweaty shoes off, and let your feet feel the ground. As I said, being in contact with the Earth will ground you. Being barefoot is probably one of the most effective ways of grounding, because the chakras in your feet are directly connected to your Root Chakra, so they are like thick wires connected to your negative terminal. This means that the connection is very strong.

3. Water, Water Everywhere

The sea is awesome. Not only does seawater contain tons and tons of nutrients, minerals and a huge variety of interesting life-forms, but salt water is like a miracle potion for your skin. It is antiseptic, will help your skin become more elastic (which means you look younger), it can heal various skin conditions, reduce stress and many other things.

Also, because of its amazing ability to conduct energy, it is an instant connection to Earth. Jumping in the sea is like jumping into the arms of Mother Nature.

4. Remember your Roots

I say 'remember' because it's truer than saying 'imagine'. We as a species used to be grounded all the time. There are tribes all over the world who spend their whole lives barefoot. Because we have slowly disconnected from the Earth over several thousand years, we have 'forgotten' what being grounded feels like.

Put your feet flat on the floor. Now, imagine a 'cord' connecting your feet to the centre of the Earth. Or, you could imagine roots coming from your feet and growing into the earth. Another way is to visualise your Earth Star Chakra, which is about 12 inches (30 centimetres) under your feet (even if you are cruising in a plane at 35,000 feet), and feel the energy flowing to and from this chakra. Of course, the Earth Star Chakra is directly connected to the planet, and as long as we stay connected to this one, it will take care of the connection to Earth.

5. Breathe

Kind of self-explanatory, but we forget about the importance of our breath. I have learnt to use my breath to amplify or soften energy flow, and concentrating on breathing is one of the best ways of calming yourself down. The old wisdom of 'take a deep breath, count to ten' is true. It reconnects you to your body (instead of flying away across the universe in your head), and will ground you if that is your intention. Try it...

Basically, you just need to want to ground yourself, as with most quantum energy exercises, the single most important thing is your intention.

Use your Imagination...

The human brain is extraordinarily complex and unimaginally powerful. The right hand side of our brain is where your imagination lives, and it is so powerful, it can affect your entire body using nothing but a dream. Have you ever had a nightmare where you have woken up completely terrified, shaking and sweating, and even maybe screaming as you wake up?

Well, that's how powerful your imagination is. Just imagine that you and the Earth are intimately, eternally and powerfully connected. Just imagine the sheer amount of energy you share, and remember:

Your body comes from this planet, and it returns to the planet to be recycled (even the by-products of cremation are assimilated back into the Earth's 'life support' system) when you die. When we are grounded, we are on a solid, even base - perfectly balanced and in a homoeostatic state.
